Your gym's New Year ads should start in December, not on 1 January

How to get Google Ads ready before the New Year rush: keywords, testing, seasonality adjustments and honest deadlines.

New Year rush? Be ready in December.

Short answer

If you want New Year sign-ups from Google Ads, build and test your campaign in December. That gives you time to check your search terms, fix broken forms or call buttons and set a real offer end date before the busy weeks start. On 2 January you want to be adding budget to something that already works, not finding out your booking form was broken.

Why December, not January

Most gym owners switch their ads on when they feel the rush. The trouble is that the first days of any new campaign are when you find the problems: keywords that pull in the wrong people, an ad that sends people to a page with no prices or timetable, a phone number that rings a closed front desk.

Fixing those in December costs you little. Fixing them in the first week of January costs you the weeks you care about most.

What to check in Keyword Planner first

Google's Keyword Planner shows estimates of how many searches a keyword gets each month, and its plan forecasts show how many clicks or conversions you're likely to get for your keywords. Those forecasts are refreshed daily, based on the last 7 to 10 days, adjusted for seasonality.

Use it to answer three questions for your own area before you set a budget:

  • What do people actually type? "Gym near me", "ladies gym", "personal trainer", "gym membership offer". Pick the ones that match what you sell.
  • How much does interest move across the year? Compare the monthly estimates, so your budget follows real demand in your area instead of a guess.
  • What would your budget buy? Run a plan forecast with your keywords and a December and January budget, and check the clicks and conversions it estimates.

Seasonality adjustments: useful for a short sale, not for a whole season

Google Ads has a setting called seasonality adjustments. It lets you tell Smart Bidding that you expect a big change in conversion rates for an upcoming event, and bidding goes back to normal when the event ends.

Two things matter here:

  1. Google says it works best for short events of 1 to 7 days, and may not work as well for longer periods, such as more than 14 days at a time. A whole New Year season is too long for it.
  2. Google also says to use it only if you expect major changes in conversion rates, because Smart Bidding already accounts for normal seasonal patterns.

So if you run a three-day "New Year, new you" sign-up offer, an adjustment for those three days can make sense. For the rest of January, let your bidding run on your normal settings and watch the results.

Urgency that doesn't lie

People respond to deadlines, so give them one, as long as it's real:

  • A real end date. "Joining fee waived until 15 January" only works if it actually ends on 15 January.
  • One clear offer per ad. A trial week or a waived joining fee, not five offers in one line.
  • Match the ad to the page. If the ad says trial week, the page it opens should show the trial week first.

A simple December to January plan

  1. Early December: pick your keywords in Keyword Planner and write two or three ads around one offer.
  2. Mid December: switch the campaign on with a small budget. Check the search terms report every few days and add negative keywords for searches that don't fit (we wrote about that in negative keywords, where Google Ads budgets leak).
  3. Late December: test every form, call button and booking link yourself, on your phone.
  4. January: raise the budget on what's working. Judge it on sign-ups, not clicks (see Clicks aren't customers).
  5. End of January: compare what each campaign cost per new member and plan next year from real numbers.

What this means for your gym

The New Year rush rewards gyms that were ready before it started. A few quiet weeks of testing in December is cheaper than a busy January spent fixing a campaign live.
